Black Republican Shrub CocktailShrub is a colonial-day drink, using a concentrated syrup made of fruit, vinegar and sugar.

23

These shrub drinks featured the Black Republican Cherry, a Slow Food Ark of Taste product, which were grown Organically at Tamiyasu Orchards in Hood River, OR, and Peak Forest Fruit in Banks, OR. Chef Timothy Wastell, from Firehouse Restaurant in Portland, OR, preserved them as a shrub since being picked in July. It was served with Organic Whiskey from KOVAL Organic Distillery.

The Lewelling Brothers brought the first Black Republican Cherry Trees to the Oregon Territory in 1847. The fruit is small, deep purple in color with an intense Black Cherry flavor. It is also the parent of the Bing Cherry. Today, Black Republican Cherry Plantings are rare, with only about 200 acres remaining in older and smaller orchards in The Dalles and Hood River growing Districts of Oregon, and even fewer in Washington, California and Eastern States.

And YES, a few were SERVED and ENJOYED!!!!!

When a bean is NOT a BEAN!

My Good Food Friends –

So here we have S&W® Non-Organic Premium Kidney Beans and EDEN® ORGANIC Kidney Beans.

                            BEANS SW                   BEANS E

The shopper may THINK  they’re making the comparison, or decision of which to buy, simply based on one being Organic, and their ‘understanding’ of what that term means, and the other being non-organic. But, ooooooh, no! Not as simple as that. When it comes to the non-organic product makers, they can never leave well enough alone. They can never just put their non-organic beans in the can, or anything else they touch for that matter, and call it even. In addition to their chemical agricultural practices, they always go on to process the life out of their non-organic stuff before they put it in the can. Then they try to rejuvenate it by adding back in sugar, salt, etc. And the euphemism  they’ve created for this practice is ‘prepared’ Dark Red Kidney Beans!

When a bean is NOT a BEAN!

EDEN® ORGANIC Kidney Beans (In a BPA-Free Can)

BEANS E

INGREDIENTS: Organic Kidney Beans, Water, Kombu Seaweed. (When I cook Organic Kidney Beans from scratch, I cut up one strand of Kombu Seaweed into the pot and cook the beans with it. It slightly tenderizes them and takes a bit of the gas out of them, too!)

 S&W® Non-Organic Premium Kidney Beans

BEANS SW

INGREDIENTS:  Prepared Dark Red Kidney Beans, Water, Sugar, Salt, Calcium Chloride, Calcium Disodium EDTA (To Promote Color). And if these S&W® Non-Organic Premium Kidney Beans are ‘premium’, then the dictionary they use for descriptive terms is quite a bit different than mine!  So they must describe it as Premium just because there’s more stuff in it: Sugar, Salt, Calcium Chloride, Calcium Disodium EDTA!

In a half-cup serving:

EDEN® ORGANIC Kidney Beans – Calories: 100

S&W® Non-Organic Premium Kidney Beans – Calories: 110 (And of course, you’ll remember, that in my ever-popular The Story of Mary and Jane, Jane’s non-organic applesauce ALSO carried a Premium! )

EDEN® ORGANIC Kidney Beans – Sodium: 15mg

S&W® Non-Organic Premium Kidney Beans – Sodium: 380mg.  There’s THAT Premium again!

EDEN® ORGANIC Kidney Beans – Dietary Fiber: 10g

S&W® Non-Organic Premium Kidney Beans – Dietary Fiber: 8g.  A missing Premium!

EDEN® ORGANIC Kidney Beans – Protein: 8g

S&W® Non-Organic Premium Kidney Beans – Protein: 7g.  ANOTHER missing Premium!

BEANS ain’t got no sugar.  S&W® Non-Organic Premium Kidney Beans – Sugar: 3g!  Oh, there’s THAT Premium back again!
